Ross CLA The CLA has set a new standard for affordable, hybrid large arbor fly reels. Abel Super Series Large Arbor Super Series Reels spools are 100% interchangeable with spools of comparably-sized standard Abel Big Game Reels. Abel calls that InterchangeABELity. You'll call it a miracle. Essentially, it gives you two totally different reels with different line capacities at the price of 1-1/2. Example: Consider a Super 8 reel and Big Game #3 spare spool. The Super 8 holds an 8-weight line with 200 yards of 20# backing, the perfect weapon for bonefish, school stripers and reds; while the interchangeable #3 spool will hold a 12-weight line plus 250 yards of 30# backing, or 500 yards of 50# Spectra, for tarpon and sailfish. Galvan Open Back Large Arbor The Open Back reel was introduced to the market in March of 1999. The Open Back incorporates a large arbor for a few reasons. First, the large diameter on the Open Back dramatically increases retrieve speed. Line is picked up much more rapidly than with a conventional spool. Second, on a long running fish, a conventional reel will spin faster and faster as more and more line is taken out. The resulting increase in drag is often enough to pop a light tippet. With a large arbor spool, drag tension remains almost constant as more line and backing are pulled from the reel, thus reducing the chances of breaking off a big fish. Finally, line is stored in bigger loops, thus reducing the line coil memory and those annoying loops that come off near the bottom of a conventional spool.
