It is on the water performance that counts to a guide and outfitter, in my opinion. Leaky waders, mushy rods, squeaky reels and poorly tied flies just do not cut it. When a client (also a friend) misses the trout of the trip, or lifetime, it can usually be tracked directly back to equipment selection. I know it is the same for those that fish without a guide, too. Huge disappointment is an understatement.
"Well, the guy I bought it from in blankety-blank, Virgin Islands Fly Shop, said it would work out West!"
I wish we had talked before he came this way. I am certain the trip would have ended differently. My friend, Barnie, knows what I'm talking about. That's why I am offering suggestions for gear selection as you investigate higher end technology and to help prepare you for that that one big fish when your chance comes along.
When a fellow angler asks me to help he/she get the basic fly fishing package put together, this is the process in which we gear up to fish the Rockies and most other places, too. I recommend a medium fast 5 wt. fly rod, 8.5-9.0 feet in length. The reel must be large enough to hold 75-120 yards of 20 lb. backing and WF5F fly line. A drag is optional but I have found a few more dollars spent for a finer tuned reel truly completes the fly fishing package.
Breathable stockingfoot waders are very comfortable, even in freezing conditions, and should be matched with a solid, tough pair of wading boots. Fit is critical and I am happy to help via phone if necessary. I have become pretty adept at helping fit anglers, if they are honest about weight and height!
The list goes on from there with vests, tools and other accoutrements, depending upon individual wants. To help you outfit for your fly fishing adventure, I have listed the necessary equipment, in different price ranges, that I am confident will deliver what every angler wants. That is - to possess the best casting fly rod, the perfectly singing reel and the rest of the gear that makes this sport so much fun when a fish is on the end of the line!
